It has been a fantastic week for me here in London at my first Nokia World 2010! And today’s announcement of Nokia’s 2^nd Touch and Type phone, the Nokia C3 has been a highlight. Not just because it’s a sleek device, but also because it features two of my favorite apps – Ovi Mail and Ovi Chat.

As I talk to the event attendees it’s amazing to think about how far we have come with Ovi Mail and Ovi Chat. Last year we showed Ovi Mail for the first time, and we were really excited to talk about our first 1M Ovi Mail customers. Today we have over 14 million Ovi Mail accounts, which means that Nokia users have activated more than 1M accounts per month for the past year! Our top 10 markets for Ovi Mail activations are  in countries like Bangladesh, Nigeria, Thailand, India, and Kenya – and 80% of consumers are accessing their Ovi Mail account from their Nokia device.

This is truly a Nokia World story –  with Nokia – many of our customers their first email and chat account – giving them a whole new way of reaching their family and friends from their Nokia device. We’ve heard incredible stories from within Nokia about how people are able to use Ovi Mail as a way to stay in touch with their family members who work outside of their home country when international calls or text messages would be too expensive. This keeps reminding me of how powerful an email or IM account can be for people.

On the show floor many people have been asking me about Ovi Chat – What is it? And how is it different from SMS? The coolest thing about Ovi Chat is that it lets you keep a conversation going because you know when someone is there. From your phone you can see if your friends are available to chat, and then you can use Ovi Chat to share big news right away, share a funny story from your day, or just say hi. And you can add personality with a smiley– when you need to let them know you are only joking! And I’ve been reminded by people here at Nokia World that our Nokia phone sales can help us develop the biggest chat community in the world, which is an incredible idea! And when you add in cool new phones like the touch and type Nokia C3 and Nokia X3 being a part of this community can be even more enticing!
