Another analyst report was released, this time from Gartner, that shows Nokia still has a huge lead in worldwide market share for the 1st quarter of 2009. Their sales were actually great in number than in 2008 and I think the Nokia 5800 availability may have had a lot to do with this increase. The people who buy Nseries devices may have been a bit hesitant this quarter and probably in the 2nd quarter as they wait for the Nokia N97 that was announced way back in the Fall of 2008. People gave Palm a bad time for their January announcement and June 6th release date, yet we still have no official release date for any worldwide location for the N97.
While Nokia’s share went down over the last year from 45.1% to 41.2%, RIM and Apple did quite well with increases from 13.3% to 19.9% and 5.3% to 10.8%, respectively. RIM has really been reaching out to consumers with their latest devices since they have a pretty good lock on customers in the corporate environment.
I would like to see a study of just the US and imagine RIM would lead with Apple and then Microsoft following behind. In an upcoming Mobile Tech Roundup podcast we actually chatted a bit about Nokia here in the US and why they really are not a player in the smartphone game.
