I’ve written about how to get Nokia Maps 2.0 up and running on your Nokia E71x and hope you have been successful. Today Nokia announced further support for Ovi Maps (they changed the name to match their services branding) 3.0. I immediately went to the Nokia Beta Labs site and followed the process to get Nokia Maps 3.0/Ovi Maps on my E71x.
I am pleased to say that so far Ovi Maps 3.0 runs like a champ on the E71x and even the * and # for zooming in and out now works! One of the best features in Ovi Maps 3.0 is the ability to send addresses/destinations to your Ovi Maps account in advance and then have the ability to easily select this on your device for quick routing. With the online site you can create favorites and even group them into collections for better organization. I created one called Danika soccer and put in all the destinations for her games so I can easily find them on my E71x when we play on the weekends.
I also like the new Dashboard screen that shows me speed, pace, altitude, and Lat/Long position.
As stated in the press release:
The latest version of Ovi Maps application on your device is enhanced through additional features and services, opening up a new world of possibilities with better maps than ever before: high resolution satellite and terrain maps - both in 2D and 3D views - 3D landmarks for over 200 cities, rotation, tilting, night view, and fly-overs and fly-throughs. Ovi Maps also offers enriched POI information by Lonely Planet, Michelin and Wcities, as well as a weather service that provides 24 hour and 5-day forecasts. Walk from one place to another by using Walk, pedestrian navigation with routing optimized for those on foot, providing better orientation in a city or outdoors. Or use Drive, fully fledged car navigation with enhanced safety and real-time traffic information covering now more countries. They also released their Ovi Maps Player API so that developers can embed Ovi Maps into websites. With Ovi Maps on the web you can also search for addresses and POIs, find places and save them into Favorites, and organize them into Collections. Check the weather situation and preplan routes for walking or driving - and then save them. Your places, collections and routes can also be synchronized over-the-air between Ovi Maps on your compatible mobile device and Ovi Maps on the web.
