Six years ago I queued for the stand-by tickets to my favorite TV talk show “Late night with Conan O’Brien”. That was my first visit to New York (by airplane, not bicycle), so I had also other things to do and see: top class museums, galleries, concerts, Broadway shows and many touristic sights such as Statue of Liberty and the Empire state building. You can imagine how my ten-day-vacation back in 2005 was packed with different activities…Conan’s show being of course one of them.
I queued for those tickets two and a half hours without luck – That day only ten “stand-by” people were let in the show, and I was of course number eleven. The following morning I had to leave back to Finland, so I promised to myself that the next time I ever visit New York, I’ll start queuing much earlier.
Unfortunately “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” was canceled in 2009, so when I visited NYC for the second time last June, I realized I couldn’t fulfill my promise anymore. However, in 2010 Conan started hosting a new talk show called “Conan” which they were shooting in Los Angeles. My trip continued in July conveniently from NYC to LA by a rental car (with two of my best buddies), so I decided to fix the broken promise.
This morning I woke up at 5.10 a.m. in Northern Los Angeles. I hopped on my bicycle, turned on Nokia Maps, and pedaled to Warner Bros Studios. It was a sixteen mile ride through LA, but my Nokia N8 guided me perfectly. I arrived to the studios 6.30a.m, three and a half hours before they would give out stand-by tickets. I was the first person in the queue. While waiting I took my laptop and started typing: “Six years ago…”
And yes, I did make it to the Conan Show.
